In November 2013, I was able to get a seasonal job at the Walmart. They did not give me 40 hours of work a week or benefits, but I hoped to work my way into a permanent position. Everything was going well until my daughter, age 8, got sick. Like many parents, I had to call in sick. It was a hard decision because it meant losing pay for that week. It also meant that I would have an attendance mark against me. After I missed several days because I also got sick, I lost my job.
